Barbara Tomkinson is the embodiment of the pioneering spirit in Safari Africa

      Barbara Tomkinson

LOOKING back through those same years, supporting both Tony and the business, known today as Tomkinson African Safaris, Barbara has established an unbeatable record For learning the ways of the bush while managing a young family at the very edge of civilisation For being unfazed by calamity and one of the rare women who truly embodied the pioneering spirit In the early days bush meat meant sometimes sharing a lion’s kill, there being little beef on hand and Barbara quickly overcame the challenges of working with fresh venison in a warm climate With the establishment of the business her skills were suddenly upgraded to include co-ownership, director of administration and logistics, camp manager, client support and a skill that comes from her sheer brilliance in the kitchens of the wilds: bush cuisine or fine dining employing both domestic and game meat with traditional ingredients Guests clamour for the Recipe book she has been promising for years and years and keep returning to sit at her table. Game meat, traditional local, you only need ask She also provides the most incredible wines that seem to appear from nowhere and create the perfect match with the ‘antelope of the day’ Always smiling always managing, she creates a safe, warm family ambience in camp and must be hailed as ‘best in her class!’
