Tomkinson A SAFARI AND HUNTING LEGEND
T
Chris Hanks sent Best Wishes with his letter, Over three safari’s, Tony’s gift to us has been a view of southern Africa that goes far beyond a hunting safari. His running travel narrative unfolded from the Cape across Kwa-Zulu-Natal, the Free State, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia. We have hunted the deeply incised valley of the Umkomass River in KZN in search of the elusive old bushbuck, kudu and nyala, to the high mountain slopes of the Free State for francolin and mountain reedbuck and the fringes of the Kalahari Desert glassing for gemsbuck and eland in Namibia.  On road trips between hunting venues Tony continually regaled us with bird calls of the Chobe, the story of apartheid at Piet Retief’s grave in the heart of Zulu Land, the biodiversity of the fynbos biome at the Cape, the railroad siding where Winston Churchill was taken prisoner during the Boar War in the Free State, and the lion ecology of the Etosha Pan in Namibia.  As a word of warning if Tony asks you to pick up lunch at the Victoria Fall Hotel in Zimbabwe, beware it costs about 2M Zim dollars. Before we can no longer travel, we will return to hunt and travel with Tony one more time. (Note to file – it is the same story after every safari – we will do this one more time!). Rod and Jacki Vawter wrote, Seeing and photographing South Africa in a small group with Tony Tomkinson was one of the best vacation experiences of our lives. Tony provides more than one would expect. His knowledge of the history and culture of his native country is excellent, made more so by his skilful storytelling. Our accommodations included a game park cabin with gourmet meals prepared by his wife Barbara, a superb small inn, and plush hotels. We learned and saw more than we ever imagined and had fun during the whole of it. Tony is a marvellous guide for South Africa!
Testimonials
Barry J. Jacobsen of Bozeman, MT says, I have done six of my eight African safaris with the Tomkinson African Safari team and believe they are amongst the best professionals in the business.   Attention to detail, honesty, vast knowledge of Africa from both the hunting and tourist perspective, timely service and wonderful memories are all hallmarks of their business. Tony is a passionate hunter, naturalist and historian who provides much more than being a top notch professional hunter, he truly helps you know and understand the wildlife and Africa itself. A camp hosted by Barbara is sure to be a gourmet experience. In addition to my many campfires with Tomkinson African Safaris, I have recommended their services to several friends and all have said they had the best trip of their lives.   From dangerous game, plains game and bird hunting to touring the many well known and not so well known tourist places of southern Africa, Tony and Barbara have my highest recommendation. They truly sell wonderful memories and I can assure you that my wife and I will be back to visit “Lady Africa” again in the care of Tomkinson African Safaris!
